Maggie May, alternatively Maggie Mae, is a minor supporting character in the Merry Gentry series. She is a brownie, and a cook in the Unseelie Court. She is Meredith's great-grandaunt on her mother's side.

She is particularly fond of faerie terriers, and she's worked on her accent to speak on the phone with other faerie terrier fanciers around the world.

Meredith has memories of hiding under Maggie May's sink with faerie puppies.

Appearance[]

Maggie May is brownie with typical brownie features. She has hairy fingers, a nose-less face, and strong yellow teeth. She wears a shapeless dress.[1]

Plot[]

Maggie May is introduced in A Stroke of Midnight as the cook of the Unseelie Court. She is questioned as part of the investigation in the murders of Beatrice and a human reporter, which happened near the kitchens. She is upset and levitating kitchenware when Meredith comes to calm her, calling her "Aunt Maggie," which surprises Maggie May because usually Sidhe would not acknowledge their relationship to a lesser fey. It works, and Maggie May tells Meredith that Onilwyn kicked her pregnant faerie terrier Dulcie when the dog went to sniff his foot, which is what enraged her.[1]

In Divine Misdemeanors, she is mentioned, this time with her name written as Maggie Mae. Matilda says that she is "cousin to Maggie Mae [who] cooks in the Unseelie Court." Meredith says that makes Matilda a cousin of Meredith's grandmother Hettie.[2]

Meredith's family tree

Maggie May is Meredith's "great-grandmother's sister on [her] mother's side," which makes her Meredith's great-grandaunt. Meredith uses the term "great-aunt" instead, and calls her "Aunt Maggie."[1] This means she is also Hettie's aunt.

Matilda is said to be Maggie May's cousin, although the exact relation is not clarified.[2]
